Better Days

Kim Seunggu's Better Days consists of scenes of crowds enjoying their days off at places like the Han river swimming pool, Ttukseom Island, and various fishing spots. The reality of a densely populated metropolis and fleeting holidays has led to the efficiency of holidays, whereby one can enjoy leisure not far away. Such contemporary Korean customs make up his work's interesting details and segments. The artist himself has mentioned that we are able to read a unique "community-oriented individualism" in such scenes. Embedded within is a resilient positivity that dose not give up hope for the future. The magical and mysterious energy of these scenes is alluded to in the two-dimensional effects-despite having photographed a three-dimensional space-along with the buoyant and fantastical colors. Firmly grounded in reality, yet somehow approaching us with a touch of the fantastic, these scenes can be said to belong to what constitutes certain facets of contemporary Korea.
